What is Brave?

Brave is a web browser for Mac that puts ad and tracker controls inside the browser rather than requiring a separate blocking extension. Its Shields settings let you adjust protection globally or for an individual website. The Chromium foundation also supports desktop browser extensions.

Blocking is not the same as removing every advertisement. Brave does not block first-party ads by default, and its own browser-based ads have separate controls. Aggressive Shields mode can block more ads, but the publisher warns that it may affect how some websites function.

This entry links to the publisher's version 1.98.60 universal DMG for Intel and Apple silicon Macs. The current Help Center lists macOS Ventura 13 or later; the release description still says macOS 12 or later, so this entry uses the stricter current support requirement. The screenshot is a publisher-provided Mac browser view, not a test of the linked installer.

What it offers

  • Block third-party trackers and the third-party ads that depend on them with built-in Brave Shields.
  • Adjust Shields settings globally or for individual websites.
  • Use desktop browser extensions on a Chromium-based browser.
  • Choose Aggressive Shields mode for additional first-party ad blocking, with possible website compatibility trade-offs.

Good to know

  • First-party ads are not blocked by default; browser-based Brave ads have separate controls.
  • Aggressive Shields mode may negatively affect some website functionality.
  • The current Help Center requires macOS Ventura 13 or later, despite the release description's older macOS 12 wording.
