What is Celestia?
Celestia lets you move through a simulated universe rather than observe the sky only from Earth. Visit a planet, follow a spacecraft or zoom out to see stars and galaxies, then change your viewpoint and simulation time to explore their positions and motion. Its object catalog and point-and-goto navigation suit self-directed astronomy exploration and visual demonstrations.
The catalog includes planets, moons, asteroids, comets, stars, galaxies and spacecraft. Add-ons can extend it with more objects, higher-resolution surface textures and additional models. Those extras are separate content: do not assume that every detailed view shown by the community is included in the base package.
This entry links to the publisher-listed Celestia 1.6.4 Windows self-extracting EXE package, listed for x86 and x64. The publisher also offers 1.7.0 nightly builds separately and warns that those builds may have bugs, crashes and incomplete features. The screenshot is an older Windows interface example from the source gallery, not a capture of the linked release running on this machine.
What it offers
- Navigate beyond Earth to planets, moons, stars, galaxies and spacecraft in a three-dimensional simulation.
- Use exponential zoom to move between large-scale space views and nearby objects.
- Change the viewpoint and simulation time to examine celestial positions and motion.
- Extend the catalogs with add-on objects, surface textures and spacecraft models.
Good to know
- Additional objects and high-resolution textures may require separate add-ons rather than the base installation.
- The separate 1.7.0 Windows nightly builds are under active development; the publisher warns of bugs, performance issues, crashes and incomplete features. This download is 1.6.4 instead.
