What is ChessX?

ChessX helps you collect and study chess games on a Mac. Open multiple PGN databases, browse a game's main line and variations, and add moves or comments to your own analysis. Position and text searches help you find relevant games, while the move tree supports opening preparation.

For a growing collection, ChessX can merge databases or individual games and remove duplicates. Its board, notation and game-list views keep the current position beside the recorded moves and database entries. Analysis supports UCI and Winboard/Xboard engines, including Stockfish and Leela.

Using an additional engine requires a compatible engine executable and configuration in ChessX's Engines preferences. The publisher's setup guide notes that an engine which cannot run independently on your Mac cannot be used by ChessX either. This entry links to the publisher-hosted 1.6.10 Mac disk image; CPU architecture and a minimum macOS version were not established from the inspected package listing.

What it offers

  • Load and save PGN files and work with multiple databases at the same time.
  • Replay games with variations, enter moves and comments, and copy or paste FEN positions.
  • Search databases by text or board position and display a tree of moves for the current position.
  • Merge databases or individual games and remove duplicate games.
  • Analyze positions with UCI or Winboard/Xboard chess engines.

Good to know

  • Additional engines need their own compatible executable and setup in Engines preferences; ChessX cannot use an engine that will not run independently on the Mac.
