What is Chromaprint?
Chromaprint generates compact fingerprints that help identify near-identical audio. For Windows users who need fingerprints rather than a library integration, the publisher provides the fpcalc command-line utility. Its JSON output can be consumed by scripts and other applications; the publisher recommends this route when the goal is generating fingerprints for AcoustID.
This download is the Windows x86-64 ZIP package for fpcalc 1.6.2, not a graphical music manager or a separately verified library SDK. The library itself exposes a C API for raw, uncompressed audio; decoding encoded files is the calling application’s responsibility. The fpcalc utility uses FFmpeg for decoding and resampling.
Chromaprint is designed for tasks such as full-file identification, duplicate audio detection and long-stream monitoring. It is not a general-purpose audio-recognition system: the project explicitly trades precision and robustness for search performance. The screenshot illustrates an older Windows fpcalc command-line interface, not the current release or a run performed for this entry.
What it offers
- Generate compact fingerprints intended for identifying near-identical audio.
- Use fpcalc programmatically and parse its JSON output.
- Integrate the library through its C API when supplying raw uncompressed audio.
- Use fingerprints in full-file identification, duplicate audio detection and long-stream monitoring workflows.
Good to know
- Not a general-purpose audio fingerprinting solution; the project trades precision and robustness for search performance.
- The library does not decode encoded audio files itself; a calling application must provide uncompressed audio.
- This linked package targets Windows x86-64. The publisher page does not specify a minimum Windows version.
