What is cloudflared?

cloudflared is the command-line connector between a local service and Cloudflare Tunnel. It suits developers sharing a local web server and administrators connecting an origin to Cloudflare without opening inbound firewall ports. This download is the standalone Windows x64 executable, not the separate MSI package.

For a temporary development link, start your local HTTP server and run cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:8080, substituting the address your service actually uses. The connector prints a trycloudflare.com URL. Without an access restriction, anyone who has that URL can reach the service; stopping the process ends the link. Quick Tunnels are for development, not production hosting.

For a persistent published application, Cloudflare's documented workflow requires an account, a domain on Cloudflare and an internet-connected server. Create the tunnel in the dashboard, choose Windows and the matching architecture, and use its installation command. Windows installations require manual updates. The screenshot is Cloudflare's historical macOS terminal example of cloudflared, not a capture of this Windows release.

What it offers

  • Connect an origin service to the Cloudflare network using a command-line tunneling daemon.
  • Share a local HTTP service through a temporary trycloudflare.com URL without an account or domain.
  • Restrict Quick Tunnel visitors by email using the documented --allowed-mail option.
  • Run a persistent tunnel using the Windows service installation workflow documented by Cloudflare.

Good to know

  • Windows instances do not update automatically; updates must be performed manually.
  • Quick Tunnels have no uptime guarantee, support at most 200 in-flight requests and do not support Server-Sent Events.
  • An unrestricted Quick Tunnel exposes the service to anyone with its URL. Its hostname changes when a new Quick Tunnel is created, and the link stops working when the process stops.
  • The documented persistent public-application workflow requires a Cloudflare account and a domain on Cloudflare.
