What is Codex Quota Overlay?

Codex Quota Overlay adds a click-through quota display beside the Codex Desktop conversation title. It shows remaining allowance and reset timing without taking focus from your work, and hides when Codex is inactive, minimized or closed. Compact, balanced and insight modes let you choose how much detail appears.

For a fuller view, open Quota Center from the Windows tray. It brings together reported rate-limit windows, recent burn rate, pace estimates and optional alerts. Quota history stays in memory by default; optional local retention can keep normalized samples for 7, 14, 30 or 90 days. These estimates depend on available quota samples rather than guaranteeing how long an allowance will last.

This independent community tool is not an OpenAI product. ChatGPT-managed Codex sign-in is required for ChatGPT quota data; API-key-only configurations may not expose it. The linked version 0.4.0 package is a Windows x64 EXE installer and is not commercially code-signed, according to the publisher. A separate portable ZIP is available on the publisher's release page.

What it offers

  • Show remaining quota and a reset countdown beside the Codex Desktop conversation title.
  • Choose compact, balanced or insight overlay density without intercepting pointer input.
  • Open Quota Center from the tray to inspect reported rate-limit windows, recent usage and pace estimates.
  • Enable optional low-quota alerts and local history retention; history is session-only by default.
  • Hide the overlay automatically when switching away from Codex, minimizing it or closing it.

Good to know

  • ChatGPT quota data requires a ChatGPT-managed Codex sign-in; API-key-only and other configurations may not expose it.
  • The Windows installer is not commercially code-signed; the publisher advises verifying its checksum before opening.
  • Quota forecasts depend on available current-cycle samples and are estimates, not guaranteed remaining working time.
  • Independent community project, not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by OpenAI.
