What is Conan Package Manager?

Conan manages libraries and dependencies for C and C++ development. It is a developer tool rather than a general Windows app store: you declare project dependencies, choose a build configuration and retrieve matching packages from ConanCenter or your own remote. Its local cache keeps packages available for reuse, while different compiler versions, architectures and build types can have separate binaries.

For a CMake project, the publisher tutorial uses a conanfile.txt to declare libraries and the CMakeDeps and CMakeToolchain generators to connect those libraries to the build. A Conan profile describes settings such as the compiler, architecture and build type. Dependency installation and application compilation are separate steps; Conan does not remove the need for the project’s compiler and build tools.

This entry selects the publisher-linked Conan 2.34.0 Windows x86_64 EXE installer. The installation documentation says system installers avoid a separate Python installation, whereas the recommended pip route needs Python 3.8 or newer. A minimum Windows build was not established for this installer.

Matching precompiled dependencies are not guaranteed for every configuration. Where suitable binaries are unavailable, packages may need a source build on the client. Offline work also depends on already having the required packages in the local cache. The screenshot shows Conan’s generated HTML dependency-graph interface, not a separate Windows desktop package browser.

What it offers

  • Manage C and C++ package dependencies through a terminal-based client.
  • Reuse binaries matched to a project’s operating system, architecture, compiler and build configuration.
  • Generate dependency and toolchain files for CMake, with integrations also available for Visual Studio/MSBuild and other build systems.
  • Store packages in a local cache and exchange them with public or private remotes.
  • Inspect dependency relationships and package states using the generated HTML graph.

Good to know

  • A compatible precompiled binary may not exist for a chosen configuration; building from source requires the appropriate compiler and build tools.
  • Offline package work requires the needed packages to be present in the local cache.
  • The default interactive HTML graph loads vis-network from Cloudflare; offline viewing needs a locally configured copy.
