What is Cppcheck?
Cppcheck examines C and C++ source code for problems such as out-of-bounds access, null pointer dereferences, uninitialized variables and memory-management errors. It is useful when compiler diagnostics are not enough, including projects that use non-standard syntax or embedded-system extensions. Choose the graphical interface to review findings or the command-line tool for a repeatable analysis command.
A useful starting point is a Cppcheck project that imports a Visual Studio solution or a compilation database such as compile_commands.json. The release manual recommends project import when available, while noting that manually configured analysis can produce different results. This Windows download is the publisher-linked 64-bit MSI for version 2.22.0; Windows XP is not supported.
Treat the findings as additional evidence, not proof that the program is correct. The manual explicitly says Cppcheck misses some bugs and cannot replace testing, dynamic analysis, fuzzing or careful design. This entry covers the open-source edition, not the separately sold Cppcheck Premium product. The images are publisher-repository GUI documentation illustrations, not screenshots from an installation tested for this entry; their interface may differ from the linked release.
What it offers
- Analyze C and C++ source for undefined behavior and dangerous coding constructs, including bounds errors, null pointers and uninitialized variables.
- Use either a graphical interface or command-line analysis.
- Import Visual Studio projects or compilation databases to supply source files and build configuration.
- Version 2.22 adds checks for STL algorithms that access beyond a container and switch cases that cannot be selected for a known condition value.
Good to know
- Analysis is incomplete: some bugs remain undetected, and static analysis does not replace testing, dynamic analysis, fuzzing or careful design.
- The linked Windows installer is 64-bit only; the publisher explicitly excludes Windows XP and does not give a complete supported Windows-version list on the product page.
- The open-source edition has only partial MISRA C 2012 coverage; broader coding-standard support and compliance-report features belong to the separate Premium offering.
