What is CS-Script?

CS-Script runs ordinary C# files as scripts, making it useful for automation and small developer tools without manually creating a project for every task. Scripts can include other source files, reference .NET assemblies and resolve NuGet packages. The standalone command-line engine handles script execution; a separate NuGet library lets developers embed the engine in their own .NET applications.

You can edit scripts in a text editor or use integrations with Visual Studio and VS Code. The publisher also documents an experimental browser-based debugger with source editing, breakpoints and variable inspection. It is not equivalent to a full IDE debugger: stopping at a breakpoint does not suspend the process threads, and edit-and-continue is unavailable.

This entry links to the publisher’s Windows ZIP for version 4.14.13.0, not an installer or the hosted-engine NuGet package. A compatible .NET environment is required, and the full SDK is needed for all features; runtime-only use has limitations. Choose a release build that matches your installed runtime rather than assuming every Windows package has identical requirements.

What it offers

  • Execute C# script files directly from the command line.
  • Include dependency scripts, reference .NET assemblies and resolve NuGet packages.
  • Build an executable from a script when a separate application is needed.
  • Use Visual Studio or VS Code integrations, or edit scripts in a suitable text editor.
  • Host the engine in .NET applications through the separately distributed CS-Script NuGet library.

Good to know

  • The full .NET SDK is needed for all features; runtime-only execution supports a more limited feature set.
  • The experimental web debugger does not suspend process threads at breakpoints and does not support edit-and-continue.
