What is Dapr CLI?

Dapr CLI is the command-line companion for developing applications with Dapr. It sets up the runtime on a local development machine or a Kubernetes cluster and provides commands for launching, listing and stopping Dapr instances. It is useful when you need to run an application with its Dapr sidecar rather than manage the runtime manually.

The linked Windows x64 ZIP contains the CLI; installing it is separate from initializing the Dapr runtime. The publisher's manual installation route is to unpack the archive, place the executable in a chosen directory and add that directory to PATH. Restart the terminal after changing PATH. An MSI installation route is also documented by the publisher.

Default local initialization downloads additional runtime binaries and creates a container-based development environment, including Redis, Zipkin, placement and scheduler services. Docker must be available for that route and must use Linux Containers mode on Windows. Slim initialization installs Dapr binaries without the default configuration files or Docker containers, so it is not the same ready-configured environment.

The screenshot is the publisher's illustrative terminal capture of dapr init. It shows an older Linux runtime example, not a Windows capture or a test of the linked release.

What it offers

  • Initialize Dapr for self-hosted development or a Kubernetes cluster.
  • Run Dapr and an application side by side in self-hosted mode.
  • List Dapr instances and stop local instances with their associated applications.
  • Retrieve application sidecar logs on Kubernetes.
  • Use slim initialization to install runtime binaries without the default Docker containers.

Good to know

  • The CLI ZIP alone does not install or initialize the Dapr runtime; initialization fetches additional binaries.
  • Default local initialization requires Docker; on Windows it must run in Linux Containers mode.
  • Slim initialization omits the default containers and configuration files, leaving those parts of the environment to you.
