What is Doxygen?

Doxygen turns annotated source code into reference documentation for developers maintaining an API or exploring a codebase. It parses information about classes, functions and variables, then creates linked output that helps readers navigate related parts of a project. Supported languages include C, C++, Python, Java, C# and Objective-C.

A project-specific Doxyfile controls input folders, output formats and extraction settings. You can run Doxygen from the command line or use Doxywizard, its graphical front-end, to configure a project and start generation. Markdown and documentation commands let you add explanations alongside code comments. Output options include HTML, XML, RTF and PDF through LaTeX.

The linked 1.18.0 DMG is the publisher's Arm build for macOS 13 or later; Intel Macs need the separate Intel package on the publisher's download page. PDF production requires a LaTeX toolchain, and most diagrams need Graphviz installed separately. The accompanying publisher screenshot shows Doxywizard on Windows as an interface example, not a capture of the Mac build.

What it offers

  • Generate linked reference documentation from source-code comments across supported programming languages.
  • Produce HTML, XML and RTF output, with PDF available through LaTeX.
  • Combine Markdown and documentation commands to describe functions, parameters and return values.
  • Control project inputs and output settings through a Doxyfile or the Doxywizard graphical front-end.
  • Create class and collaboration diagrams, with Graphviz required for most diagram types.

Good to know
