What is Electric Sheep?

Electric Sheep turns an idle computer into a display for collaborative abstract art. Rather than showing a fixed slideshow, the screensaver participates in a network that shares the work of creating morphing animations, called sheep. It suits people who want generative visuals and are comfortable with an internet-connected screensaver.

Viewers can vote for favorite animations with the keyboard. Those preferences influence a genetic algorithm: popular sheep live longer and reproduce through mutation and cross-over. The project also links to flam3 for people who want to design sheep and submit them to the shared gene pool.

The publisher recommends a high-bandwidth, always-on internet connection and warns that server load can delay the first animations. Its desktop instructions identify F2 for monitoring progress and F1 for help while the screensaver is running. Current server operation and compatibility with recent Windows releases have not been established here.

This entry links to the publisher's Windows EXE named electricsheep-3.0.2.exe. Softonic's older listing identifies 2.7b33, so its version date and Windows Vista specification are not presented as requirements for this package. The publisher describes the standard Electric Sheep service as free and open source; its separate HD Gold Sheep and Infinidream offers are not included in that claim.
