What is Erlang/OTP?

Erlang/OTP provides a development environment for concurrent applications. The Erlang runtime supports concurrency, distribution and fault tolerance, while OTP supplies libraries and design principles for building systems that need high availability. It is aimed at developers rather than users looking for a general-purpose desktop application.

The environment includes an interactive shell, a graphical Debugger and the Observer system-inspection tool. Observer exposes process information, application supervisor trees and ETS and Mnesia tables. Debugger lets you set breakpoints and inspect execution, but its interpreter only accepts modules compiled with debug_info.

This entry links to the publisher-listed 64-bit Windows EXE installer for Erlang/OTP 29.1.2. The screenshot is the publisher guide’s historical Debugger Monitor illustration; its capture platform and version are unspecified, so it is not a preview of a newly installed 29.1.2 Windows session.

What it offers

  • Develop concurrent and distributed applications with Erlang and the OTP libraries.
  • Use the interactive Erlang shell to call functions while developing programs.
  • Inspect processes, supervisor trees, ETS tables and Mnesia tables with Observer.
  • Set breakpoints and inspect variable values with the graphical Debugger.

Good to know

  • Debugger can interpret only modules compiled with the debug_info option.
