What is Finicky?

Finicky decides which browser opens a link instead of sending every URL to the same browser. Set it as your Mac's default browser, then configure rules to send work sites to one browser and personal sites to another. It forwards links to your chosen browsers; it is not a web browser itself.

The linked v4.2.2 release documents JavaScript or TypeScript configuration, wildcard URL matching, regular expressions, custom functions and URL rewriting. Rules can change a destination or remove tracking parameters before the browser opens it. Its setup requires creating a configuration file and allowing Finicky to become the default browser.

The screenshot is the publisher's newer v4.4.0-alpha preferences interface, not a capture of the linked v4.2.2 release. The homepage's visual rules editor and other newer interface features should not be assumed to be included in this download.

What it offers

  • Send different URL patterns to different browsers from one configuration.
  • Write routing rules in JavaScript or TypeScript with wildcards, regular expressions and custom functions.
  • Rewrite URLs before opening them, such as changing a destination or removing tracking parameters.
  • Use a default browser for links that do not match a routing rule.

Good to know

  • The v4.2.2 installation instructions require a JavaScript or TypeScript configuration file and setting Finicky as the default browser.
  • Requires macOS 12 or later; this is not a Windows or Linux application.
  • The publisher screenshot depicts v4.4.0-alpha, not the linked v4.2.2 download; newer visual-editor features are not established for this release.
