What is Firebird?

Firebird is a relational database engine for applications that need SQL queries, transactions, stored procedures and triggers. It can run as a Windows service and provides a choice of SuperServer, SuperClassic and Classic server modes. The Firebird 5 release line adds SQL query profiling and parallel processing for operations including backup, restore and sweep.

The linked package is the 64-bit Windows executable installer for Firebird 5.0.4; 32-bit and manual-install ZIP packages are separate. Windows installation requires administrator privileges. Plan an upgrade around your database format: the Firebird 5 engine can open Firebird 4 databases, but it cannot directly open databases created by Firebird 3 or earlier. Back up existing databases before replacing an installation and follow the publisher’s migration guidance.

The screenshot comes from the official Firebird 5 Quick Start Guide and shows the 5.0.0 setup wizard, not a hands-on test of 5.0.4.

What it offers

  • Use SQL queries, transactions, stored procedures and triggers in database-backed applications.
  • Choose SuperServer, SuperClassic or Classic server mode; Windows service operation is supported.
  • Profile SQL and PSQL execution with the Firebird 5 profiler.
  • Use Firebird 5 parallel processing for backup, restore and sweep operations.

Good to know

  • Windows installation requires administrator privileges.
  • The standard Firebird 5 engine does not directly open databases created by Firebird 3 or older; migration requires preparation and backups.
