What is Free Pascal?

Free Pascal turns Pascal and Object Pascal source code into compiled programs. It suits maintaining Turbo Pascal code, working with supported Delphi language features or developing Pascal projects from the command line. Its text-mode IDE brings together a syntax-highlighting editor, compiler access, debugger and symbol browser in a Turbo Pascal-style interface.

This entry links to the publisher’s Free Pascal 3.2.2 installer for native Win32 development. The Win64 cross-compiler is a separate add-on that requires the native compiler; the selected download is not a standalone 64-bit compiler package.

Language compatibility does not make every Delphi project a drop-in build. The manual documents differences in Windows API parameters, runtime type information and default type sizes. Windows console applications are the default; GUI application output must be explicitly selected. The screenshot is the publisher’s documentation illustration of the text-mode IDE, not a capture of software installed or tested by SoftGalaxy.

What it offers

  • Compile Pascal and Object Pascal source with Turbo Pascal 7.0 and broad Delphi language compatibility.
  • Use classes, exceptions, interfaces, function overloading and operator overloading.
  • Edit code with syntax highlighting in a text-mode IDE that also includes a debugger and symbol browser.
  • Add separately supplied cross-compilers when targeting other supported systems from Win32.

Good to know

  • Delphi code can need porting changes because Windows API signatures, RTTI layout and default type sizes are not identical.
  • The linked package is the native Win32 compiler; the Win64 cross-compiler is a separate add-on, not included in this download.
