What is Freeplane?
Freeplane turns connected ideas into mind maps you can navigate and develop over time. Use it to organize study material, outline a project or keep related information together rather than spreading it across separate notes. Node formatting and reusable styles help distinguish parts of a map, while add-ons extend the available tools.
For a more technical use, Code Explorer displays packages, classes and their dependencies as an interactive map of compiled JVM code. The screenshot shows this mode on macOS; it is a publisher example, not a capture of a locally installed copy or proof of the selected release.
The linked Freeplane 1.13.3 package is for Apple silicon Macs. Publisher documentation specifies macOS 14 or later for bundled Mac distributions and includes Java 21, so this package does not require a separate Java installation. Intel Macs need the separate Intel DMG. These bundled distributions do not include the VAqua adaptive look and feel.
What it offers
- Build and navigate mind maps to organize ideas, study material and project information.
- Format nodes and apply reusable styles to make a map's structure easier to distinguish.
- Extend the application with add-ons for additional workflows.
- Visualize packages, classes and dependencies in compiled JVM code using Code Explorer.
Good to know
- The bundled macOS distributions require macOS 14 or later.
- This download targets Apple silicon; Intel Macs require a different DMG.
- The bundled Mac distributions do not include the VAqua adaptive look and feel.
