What is Gaia Sky?

Gaia Sky turns astronomical datasets into an explorable 3D universe. It suits following planetary orbits, viewing the structure of the Milky Way and examining objects from catalogs such as Gaia DR3 and SDSS. Its integrated dataset manager lets you choose the data to load rather than treating the installation as a complete, fixed sky map.

For a first session, the publisher documents a recommended-datasets option on the welcome screen or a custom selection through the dataset manager. You can enable or disable installed datasets, then explore the selected scene. Gaia Sky also accepts your own data in formats including VOTable, FITS and CSV, and can record camera paths for returning to a journey.

The linked macOS DMG contains the program, not the astronomical datasets. Allow additional download time and disk space for those. Although the publisher lists both Intel and Apple silicon Macs, its downloads page specifies a compatibility layer for Apple silicon; this is not a claim of a native ARM build. The macOS package is not signed by Apple, and the publisher's OpenXR VR support is listed for Windows and Linux, not macOS.

What it offers

  • Explore planets, stars and galaxies using scientific catalogs including Gaia DR3 and SDSS.
  • Choose, download, enable and disable datasets with the integrated dataset manager.
  • Import your own VOTable, FITS or CSV data.
  • View stellar positions, proper motions and radial velocities where the dataset provides them.
  • Record and replay camera paths to revisit a route through the scene.

Good to know

  • The installation contains no datasets; the required base data and any selected catalogs are separate downloads.
  • Apple silicon support is described through a compatibility layer on the publisher's downloads page, not as a native ARM build.
  • The macOS package is not signed by Apple and may be identified as coming from an unidentified developer.
  • The publisher lists OpenXR VR support for Windows and Linux, not macOS.
