What is GB Studio?

GB Studio is a free, open-source game creator for building Game Boy projects on macOS. Its visual scripting approach lets beginners assemble game logic without starting with code, while the editor brings together scenes, game events, music and a debugger. It supports top-down adventures, platform games and shooters, with ROM and web export for sharing the result.

The linked version 4.3.2 download is the Apple Silicon ZIP archive, not the Intel build. Unzip it and move GB Studio.app to Applications. Intel Mac users need the separate Intel package listed by the publisher. The installation documentation does not specify a minimum macOS version, and Apple Command Line Tools may be needed if building or running a game fails. Playing exported ROMs on original Game Boy hardware also requires a flash cart.

What it offers

  • Build game logic with visual scripting and arrange scenes in a drag-and-drop editor.
  • Create top-down, platform and shooter games.
  • Compose music with piano roll and tracker modes.
  • Inspect projects with the built-in debugger.
  • Export Game Boy ROMs, browser-playable games with mobile touch controls, or Analogue Pocket files.

Good to know

  • This direct download is the Apple Silicon build; Intel Macs require the separate Intel archive.
  • The publisher does not specify a minimum macOS release in the installation documentation; game building or preview may require Apple Command Line Tools.
  • Playing exported games on original Game Boy hardware requires a flash cart.
