What is Godot Engine?

Godot Engine brings scene editing and game scripting into one workspace. Assemble nodes into reusable scenes, add behavior with GDScript, and create 2D levels with the tile map editor or work with imported 3D models. Its layout tools also let you build game menus and other interfaces. The engine is open source under the MIT license; games you create can use a license of your choice, while redistribution of the engine requires its copyright and license notice.

The linked Windows package is the standard x86_64 editor: extract the ZIP and run the executable, with no installation required. It does not include C# support; C# projects need the separate .NET editor and .NET SDK. Export templates are a separate download when preparing games for distribution. Hardware requirements depend on the renderer and project: the Compatibility renderer needs OpenGL 3.3, while Forward+ needs Vulkan-capable graphics.

What it offers

  • Compose reusable scenes from nodes and customize their behavior with GDScript.
  • Create 2D levels with a dedicated 2D pipeline and tile map editor.
  • Import 3D assets in formats including glTF and FBX, or import Blender files directly.
  • Build menus and adaptive interfaces with the engine's GUI layout system.

Good to know

  • The linked standard editor does not support C#; use the separate .NET edition with the .NET SDK for C# projects.
  • Export templates must be downloaded separately to export games. Graphics requirements vary by renderer; a PC meeting the editor minimums is not a performance guarantee for a larger project.
