G*Power for Windows
Estimate sample size and statistical power with G*Power, a free Windows utility for t, F, chi-square, z and selected exact tests, with effect-size calculations and power plots.
- Operating system
- Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 and 11, as listed by the publisher
- Architecture
- Not explicitly specified on the publisher download page
- Download package
- ZIP archive containing GPowerNT.exe and a Visual C++ runtime helper
Extract all files before opening GPowerNT.exe. If it fails to start, the publisher directs users to VC_redist.x86.exe. Compatibility was not tested for this entry.

What is G*Power?
G*Power helps researchers plan studies by calculating statistical power and required sample sizes for supported hypothesis tests. Choose a test family and analysis type, enter the relevant effect size and error probabilities, and inspect the numerical results. It also calculates effect sizes and plots how power changes across a range of parameters.
Its scope is power analysis rather than general dataset analysis: the Softonic product description notes that it does not import datasets or analyze raw data directly. The publisher provides a manual and research papers for choosing and configuring the supported procedures.
This entry links directly to the publisher's Windows 3.1.9.7 ZIP archive. The publisher instructs users to extract all files and open GPowerNT.exe. If it fails to start, the supplied VC_redist.x86.exe can obtain the required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. No installation or calculation accuracy testing was performed for this entry.
The screenshot is the publisher's G*Power 3.1 interface example with macOS window controls. It illustrates the analysis controls and effect-size drawer; it is not a capture of the Windows release.
What it offers
- Run power analyses for supported t tests, F tests, chi-square tests, z tests and selected exact tests.
- Estimate required sample size with an a priori analysis, or examine achieved power and sensitivity using other analysis modes.
- Calculate effect sizes with test-specific input controls.
- Display power-analysis results graphically, including power curves across parameter ranges.
Good to know
- No dataset import or direct raw-data analysis; this is a dedicated power-analysis utility, not a general statistics package.
- The Windows program requires Microsoft Visual C++ runtime libraries; obtaining a missing runtime can require an additional download.
- Free use includes commercial environments, but selling G*Power is prohibited and distribution outside the publisher website requires author permission.
