What is Gretl?
Gretl is the Gnu Regression, Econometrics and Time-series Library, a free, open-source package for econometric analysis. Use its graphical interface to work with datasets, estimate models and generate graphs, or automate repeatable analysis with the integrated hansl scripting language. It supports methods including least squares, maximum likelihood and GMM, alongside time-series and panel-data tools.
Data support includes CSV, Excel and OpenDocument worksheets, Stata .dta files and SPSS .sav files. Model results can be exported in LaTeX format, and Gretl provides facilities to exchange data and results with tools such as R, Python and Julia.
This entry links to the stable 2026c EXE installer for Intel/AMD 64-bit Windows 10 or higher. ARM64, legacy 32-bit and no-admin ZIP packages are separate choices on the publisher’s Windows page. MPI-based parallelization on Intel/AMD Windows needs Microsoft’s separate MPI package, while X-13-ARIMA-SEATS and TRAMO/SEATS are optional extras rather than part of the core download. The gallery images are historical examples; the Windows data-view screenshot uses Spanish menus and does not establish the appearance of release 2026c.
What it offers
- Estimate least-squares, maximum-likelihood and GMM models.
- Analyze time series with ARIMA, GARCH, VAR/VECM, unit-root and cointegration methods.
- Use panel-data estimators, including instrumental-variable and dynamic-panel methods.
- Automate analysis with hansl scripts and matrix operations.
- Import supported spreadsheet and statistical-data formats, generate Gnuplot graphs and export models as LaTeX.
Good to know
- MPI-based parallelization on Intel/AMD Windows requires a separate Microsoft MPI installation.
- X-13-ARIMA-SEATS and TRAMO/SEATS are optional separate installations.
- The linked x64 EXE is for Intel/AMD Windows 10 or higher; ARM64 and no-administrator ZIP packages are separate downloads.
