What is GTD-Free?

GTD-Free organizes personal tasks around the Getting Things Done workflow. Collect an idea in the in-basket, process it into an action, organize it in lists or projects, and queue the next action to carry out. Separate areas for someday/maybe items and reference material help keep immediate work apart from information you want to retain.

The Windows interface uses distinct Collect, Process, Organize/Review and Execute panels. Reminder dates, a tickler view and priorities offer ways to review what needs attention without putting every item into one undifferentiated list. Data stays locally on the desktop rather than requiring a hosted account.

This entry selects the publisher-listed stable 0.4.3 Windows EXE, not the separate 0.6-beta testing release. The publisher documents Java 1.6 as a requirement, while Softonic lists Windows Vista; current Windows 10/11 compatibility and package architecture are not established by the inspected sources. Treat it as a legacy application, not a recently maintained task service. The screenshots show the historical 0.4 Windows interface.

Existing users should preserve their original data before moving to 0.4.3: its release notes say older XML files are imported automatically, but saved and exported data uses the newer format.

What it offers

  • Collect tasks and ideas in an in-basket before processing them.
  • Organize actions into editable lists, projects, someday/maybe lists and reference material.
  • Review reminder dates in the tickler view and assign action priorities.
  • Keep task data locally; stable 0.4.3 uses XML data files.
  • Queue immediate next actions in the Execute workflow.

Good to know

  • Legacy Java dependency: the publisher specifies Java 1.6, and the inspected sources do not establish Windows 10/11 compatibility.
  • Version 0.4.3 changes the XML data format: older files can be imported, but saving or exporting writes the newer format.
