What is HD Tune?
HD Tune brings read benchmarking, drive information, S.M.A.R.T. health information and an error scan into one Windows utility. It is useful when you want to examine a drive's read performance or check the information a supported drive exposes, without choosing the paid Pro edition. This entry links to the publisher's HD Tune 2.55 EXE, not the HD Tune Pro trial.
The distinction matters: freeware HD Tune does not include write benchmarking, secure erase, file benchmarking or disk monitoring. The publisher also reserves external-drive health and temperature support for Pro, even though external drives appear in the freeware hardware requirements. Availability of individual functions depends on the drive.
Version 2.55 dates from 12 February 2008. Its official operating-system list is Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7; this entry does not claim Windows 10 or 11 compatibility for the freeware package. The gallery illustration is a historical HD Tune 2.50 Error Scan window, not a capture of 2.55 or a test performed by SoftGalaxy.
What it offers
- Measure low-level drive read performance with the benchmark function.
- Inspect detailed drive information.
- View S.M.A.R.T. health information where supported by the drive.
- Scan for drive errors using the Error Scan function.
Good to know
- Free for personal use; the publisher does not describe this freeware license as unrestricted commercial use.
- The official freeware operating-system list ends at Windows 7; Windows 10 and 11 support is not established for this package.
- Write benchmarking, secure erase, file benchmarking, disk monitoring and S.M.A.R.T. self-tests are Pro features, not included here.
- External-drive health and temperature support is not included in freeware, and hardware limitations can prevent some functions from working.
