What is Horizon EDA?

Horizon EDA connects parts management, schematic capture and PCB layout in one electronic-design workflow. Its pool manager holds the parts, symbols and packages used by a project, while the schematic editor tracks electrical nets rather than treating a circuit as an unrelated collection of lines. It suits designing a board from its component library through to manufacturing output.

The board editor combines interactive routing with design-rule checks, including differential-pair routing. A 3D view helps inspect the assembled board, and STEP export carries the board and its component models into a mechanical CAD workflow. For fabrication, the documented outputs include Gerber and NC-Drill files; bills of materials and pick-and-place files support assembly.

There is an important distinction between interactive routing and automatic routing: an autorouter and SPICE-type circuit simulation are outside Horizon EDA’s stated scope. Use it for PCB design, not as a replacement for a circuit simulator. The schematic and board also do not share a continuously live netlist: save schematic changes and reload the board netlist, or use the documented Save and reload netlist action.

This entry links to the official version 2.7.2 Windows x64 MSI, not a development snapshot. The publisher supports only Windows versions in active support; older systems may run the software, but bugs specific to them are not supported. The screenshot is a publisher documentation illustration of the board editor, not evidence of a local installation or a capture of this exact Windows release.

What it offers

  • Manage reusable electronic parts, symbols and packages through the pool manager.
  • Draw net-aware schematics and carry the design into the PCB board editor.
  • Route tracks and differential pairs interactively with design-rule checks.
  • Inspect boards in 3D and export STEP data for mechanical CAD.
  • Export Gerber, NC-Drill, bill-of-materials and pick-and-place files.

Good to know

  • Automatic routing and SPICE-type simulation are outside the project’s stated scope.
  • Only Windows versions in active support are supported; older-version-specific bugs will not be fixed.
  • Schematic edits require saving and reloading the board netlist rather than assuming immediate synchronization.
