What is Icaros?
Icaros helps identify media files without opening each one. Its Windows shell extensions supply File Explorer with thumbnails for video formats supported by FFmpeg, including MKV, AVI, MP4, MOV and FLV. Custom parsers can use embedded cover art for supported formats such as MKV, FLAC, APE and MPC. A separate property handler exposes details such as duration, dimensions, title and audio channels.
Use IcarosConfig to choose which file types receive thumbnails and to activate thumbnailing or properties. The publisher documents presets, file selection and drag-and-drop checks for adding formats. Thumbnail offset controls where a frame is taken from; black/white frame detection can skip unsuitable frames, but its extra scanning can slow thumbnail generation. An optional cache has static and dynamic modes, although Explorer still needs to process cached thumbnails and can retain a small rendering delay.
The publisher lists Windows Vista through Windows 11 and distinguishes the dependency-free shell extensions from IcarosConfig, which requires .NET Framework 4. Activation through the configuration tool requires administrative privileges. Deactivating Icaros or removing a registered file type is documented to restore its previous shell extension. This entry links to the official 3.3.6 EXE installer; the gallery image shows the older 2.1.1 interface, not the current release.
What it offers
- Generate File Explorer thumbnails for supported FFmpeg video formats, including MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV and FLV.
- Display embedded cover art for supported media and expose duration, dimensions and other file properties.
- Configure thumbnail file types with presets, selected files, drag and drop or an editable extension list.
- Adjust thumbnail frame offsets, detect black or white frames and manage an optional static or dynamic cache.
- Version 3.3.6 adds animated WebP thumbnailing, MKV thumbnail rotation and the MKV Sort title property.
Good to know
- IcarosConfig requires .NET Framework 4; activation through the GUI requires administrative privileges. The shell extensions themselves have no dependencies according to the publisher.
- Only supported formats can be thumbnailed; the publisher documents checking a sample file before registering its type.
- Black/white frame scanning can slow thumbnailing, and Explorer can still introduce a rendering delay when the Icaros cache is enabled.
- Icaros is not open source, despite using GitHub for its issue tracker and release downloads.
