What is ImHex?

ImHex helps developers and reverse engineers examine binary files beyond a plain grid of bytes. Its hex view supports byte patching, string and hex searches, bookmarks and undo/redo. The data inspector interprets selected bytes as numeric values, text and other types, with controls for byte order.

For structured formats, ImHex's C-like Pattern Language defines data types and structures that parse and highlight a file's contents. Data-information views add byte-distribution and entropy graphs, while comparison tools highlight differences between data sources. These tools suit investigating an unfamiliar file format or checking a binary change.

The linked 1.38.1 package is the ARM64 DMG for Apple silicon Macs, not the separate Intel build. The publisher lists macOS 15 Sequoia or higher for its release binaries and says the Mac build is unsigned. The standard build also requires OpenGL 3.0 support; a separate software-rendered NoGPU package exists for Intel Macs. The publisher screenshot illustrates the shared application interface with Windows window controls, not a verified Mac session.

What it offers

  • Edit bytes with patch management, undo/redo, string and hex searches, and named bookmarks.
  • Parse and highlight structured files using a C-like Pattern Language with structs, arrays, pointers and endianness support.
  • Interpret selected bytes through the data inspector as integers, floating-point values, characters and other types.
  • Examine byte-distribution and entropy graphs, compare data sources and disassemble supported instruction sets.

Good to know

  • Publisher release binaries require macOS 15 Sequoia or higher; older macOS versions require a source build rather than this DMG.
  • The publisher says the macOS build is unsigned and may require approval in the system security settings.
  • This ARM64 download targets Apple silicon, not Intel Macs. The standard build requires OpenGL 3.0; the separately listed Mac NoGPU asset is x86_64.
