What is ImHex?

ImHex is a hex editor for programmers and reverse engineers who need to inspect binary files beyond a plain byte listing. Its hex view supports byte patching, search and bookmarks, while the data inspector interprets selected bytes as integers, floating-point values, strings and other types. The C-like Pattern Language lets you describe structures and highlight their fields in the file.

For analysis, ImHex includes a disassembler, file comparison, hashes and graphs of byte distribution and entropy. These tools help examine a file’s layout and compare changes without switching between separate utilities.

This entry links to the publisher’s version 1.38.1 Windows x64 MSI installer, not the separate ARM64 or portable packages. The standard build requires OpenGL 3.0 support. The publisher offers a separate NoGPU build for software rendering, but warns that it can be substantially slower; some Intel HD graphics drivers on Windows can also produce graphical artifacts.

What it offers

  • Edit and patch bytes with undo/redo, string and hex search, and named bookmarks.
  • Parse and highlight binary structures using the C-like Pattern Language.
  • Interpret selected bytes as numbers, strings and other types in the data inspector.
  • Compare data sources, calculate hashes and examine byte-distribution and entropy graphs.
  • Disassemble supported instruction sets with the integrated Capstone-based disassembler.

Good to know

  • The standard build requires OpenGL 3.0; separate software-rendered NoGPU builds can be much slower.
  • Certain Intel HD graphics drivers on Windows are known by the publisher to cause graphical artifacts.
