What is InVesalius?

InVesalius turns sequences of CT or MRI DICOM images into 3D reconstructions. Its workflow combines axial, sagittal and coronal slice views with segmentation tools, so you can isolate structures before creating a surface. Tissue thresholds, watershed segmentation and brush-style editing provide different ways to refine a mask. Linear and angular measurements help examine the image data, while surface export supports formats including STL, PLY and OBJ.

The linked download is version 3.1.99998 for Apple Silicon Macs, supplied as a DMG by the publisher. A separate Intel Mac package is listed on the same release page. The screenshots are illustrations from the publisher's desktop user guide, not captures of this Mac build.

Input quality matters: the user guide warns that image ordering and orientation need checking, and incorrect voxel spacing can produce incorrect measurements. Large image series may also require reducing slice resolution or skipping images when memory is insufficient. This listing does not establish clinical suitability or certify reconstruction accuracy.

What it offers

  • Import CT and MRI DICOM image sequences for 3D reconstruction.
  • Inspect axial, sagittal and coronal slice views alongside a 3D workspace.
  • Segment structures with tissue thresholds, watershed tools and slice-based brush editing.
  • Take linear and angular measurements and measure 3D surface volume.
  • Create surfaces and export them as STL, PLY, OBJ and other supported formats.

Good to know

  • Image ordering and orientation require checking; incorrect voxel spacing produces incorrect measurements.
  • Large image series can exceed available memory, requiring reduced slice resolution or skipped images.
  • This download is the Apple Silicon package; Intel Macs require the separate publisher package.
