What is Joplin?
Joplin keeps notes, to-dos and attachments together in searchable notebooks. It suits personal research, meeting notes and task lists that need more structure than a folder of text files. Tags and full-text search help locate saved material, while Markdown and Rich Text editors provide two ways to edit the same underlying notes. Its offline-first design keeps your notes available on your computer without an internet connection.
Notes can include images, audio, video and PDFs. Plugins and themes let you customize the desktop app, and synchronization supports services including Dropbox, OneDrive and Joplin Cloud. Joplin Cloud is an optional service, not the desktop application download. The linked DMG is version 3.7.21 for Apple Silicon Macs; the publisher also lists a separate macOS download.
The editor choice has a practical constraint: notes remain Markdown underneath the Rich Text view. Most Markdown plugins are not compatible with Rich Text editing, and unsupported plugin formatting can be lost when a note is edited there. Keep plugin-dependent notes in the Markdown editor unless the plugin is documented as compatible.
What it offers
- Organize notes and to-dos into notebooks, add tags and locate content with full-text search.
- Write in Markdown or use a Rich Text editor while retaining Markdown-based notes.
- Attach images, PDFs, audio and video to notes.
- Keep notes accessible offline and synchronize across desktop and mobile apps using supported services.
- Customize the desktop application with plugins and themes.
Good to know
- Most Markdown plugins are incompatible with the Rich Text editor; editing affected notes there can remove their special formatting.
- The linked ARM64 DMG is for Apple Silicon Macs. It is not the publisher's separate non-ARM macOS package.
