What is Keka?
Keka packs files and folders into compressed archives and extracts archives you receive. Drag files onto its window or Dock icon to start compression, choose an output format such as 7z or ZIP, or split a large archive into smaller parts for transfer. It suits routine Mac tasks such as bundling a folder, unpacking a download or preparing a password-protected archive.
Encryption depends on the format: the publisher documents AES-256 for 7z and legacy Zip 2.0 encryption for ZIP. Those are not equivalent protection options. Keka also opens more formats than it creates; RAR appears in its extraction list, not its standard creation list.
The publisher offers a free website download and a paid Mac App Store edition that supports development. It describes both as the same app, with the store edition updated through the App Store. The gallery image below is an older Mac interface supplied by Softonic; it illustrates archive controls rather than confirming the appearance of version 1.6.8.
What it offers
- Create archives in formats including 7z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, XZ and ZSTD.
- Extract RAR, ZIPX and other supported archive formats.
- Compress files by dragging them onto the Keka window or Dock icon.
- Password-protect 7z archives using AES-256 encryption.
- Split large archives into smaller parts.
Good to know
- The publisher documents legacy Zip 2.0 encryption for ZIP, rather than the AES-256 protection documented for 7z.
- RAR is listed for extraction, not standard archive creation.
- Setting Keka as the default extraction application requires the publisher's separate helper.
