What is Keybase?
Keybase brings messaging, file sharing and team collaboration into a Mac desktop app, with command-line tools available alongside the graphical interface. Use it for one-to-one conversations, group discussions or shared team work. Private chats and shared private files use end-to-end encryption; teams can organize conversations into channels and collaborate on encrypted Git repositories.
A team channel is not a private room within that team: every team member can read its messages and files, and new members can read retained chat history. Use a subteam when only a subset of people should participate. Contacts who do not already use Keybase must create an account before receiving your messages.
The linked disk image is the publisher's Apple Silicon (arm64) package. The official macOS installation page also lists a separate Intel package. Version, release date and minimum macOS version are not established by the sources used for this entry. The screenshot is a publisher-provided macOS interface example, not a capture from a locally installed or tested copy.
What it offers
- Send end-to-end encrypted private messages to individuals and groups.
- Organize team conversations into channels and create subteams for smaller groups.
- Share private documents, photos and other files through Keybase Files.
- Collaborate on encrypted Git repositories with a team.
- Use the Mac graphical interface or Keybase command-line tools.
Good to know
- Team channels are visible to every team member; new members can read retained team chat history.
- Recipients without a Keybase account must create one before receiving messages; one of the sender's devices must be online for that delivery.
- Public-folder files and messages in public chats are exceptions to the service's end-to-end encryption coverage.
