What is Keybase?

Keybase combines private messaging, team conversations and file sharing in one desktop client. It is designed for groups that want to discuss work and exchange documents using end-to-end encryption. The publisher also describes connecting with communities through public identities and setting expiration timers on sensitive messages.

On Windows, the Keybase File System (KBFS) integrates with File Explorer as a K: drive, and Keybase Shell provides command-line access. This entry links to the AMD64 MSI exposed by the publisher’s Windows installation page. Its version was not established from the package, so no release number or release date is asserted.

Encryption does not make every area private: the publisher excludes public-folder files and public-chat messages from its end-to-end encryption statement. Account recovery also needs preparation. Keybase warns that losing every provisioned device without retaining a paper key can permanently lose access to the account and its content.

What it offers

  • Exchange private messages and share group photos, videos and documents with end-to-end encryption.
  • Organize conversations in teams and connect with communities through public identities.
  • Set expiration timers on sensitive messages using exploding messages.
  • Access KBFS through the Windows K: drive and use Keybase Shell for command-line operations.

Good to know

  • Public-folder files and public-chat messages are not covered by the publisher’s end-to-end encryption statement.
  • Losing all provisioned devices without a retained paper key can permanently lose access to the account and its content.
