What is KiCad?

KiCad brings schematic capture, PCB layout and 3D board inspection into one electronics design suite. Its Schematic Editor supports hierarchical designs, custom symbols and the official symbol library, with an electrical rules checker and integrated SPICE simulation. The PCB Editor provides interactive routing, while the 3D Viewer helps inspect mechanical fit and preview the finished board.

This entry links to the Windows x64 EXE installer for stable version 10.0.7. ARM64 is a separate download on the publisher's Windows page. Check hardware requirements before choosing KiCad: the publisher specifies OpenGL 2.1 graphics with hardware shader support and warns that toolbar buttons can be hidden at lower screen resolutions. The download page lists Windows 10 and 11, but the requirements page dates Windows 10 support to October 14, 2025; Windows 10 installation compatibility should not be confused with ongoing support.

What it offers

  • Capture basic or hierarchical schematics using custom symbols and the official KiCad symbol library.
  • Check schematic designs with an electrical rules checker and integrated SPICE simulator.
  • Lay out printed circuit boards with an interactive router.
  • Inspect a board in the 3D Viewer and use its raytracer with customizable lighting.

Good to know

  • Requires graphics supporting OpenGL 2.1 or greater and hardware shaders; lower screen resolutions may hide toolbar buttons.
  • The publisher's Windows download page lists Windows 10, but its support table gives October 14, 2025 as Windows 10's support end date.
