What is KLayout?

KLayout is a layout viewer and editor for semiconductor mask designs. Open GDS2 or OASIS data, inspect the cell hierarchy and control how layers appear to understand a design. Rulers, layer overlays and shape or instance browsing help examine geometry without treating a chip layout as a flat image.

Editor mode adds tools for drawing polygons, creating cells, transforming objects and applying boolean layer operations. Ruby and Python scripting support layout generation and parametrized cells, while XOR, layout comparison, DRC and LVS tools support analysis workflows.

The linked 0.30.12 DMG is the publisher’s Intel x86_64 build for Sonoma 14.1. Its heavyweight package embeds Qt5 and Python 3 but uses the OS-bundled Ruby. It is not the separate ARM64 Tahoe build, and the publisher’s lightweight packages require matching development environments. Choose by operating system and architecture rather than assuming every Mac package is interchangeable.

The screenshot is a historical publisher example showing KLayout 0.17.1 and its ruler tools. It demonstrates the application’s layout interface, not how version 0.30.12 looks on macOS.

What it offers

  • Read GDS2 and OASIS layouts and inspect hierarchical cells.
  • Overlay layouts and configure layer colors, patterns, transparency and groups.
  • Create cells and shapes, transform geometry and apply boolean operations in editor mode.
  • Automate layout generation and parametrized cells using Ruby or Python.
  • Compare designs with XOR and layout diff tools; develop DRC and LVS scripts.

Good to know

  • This download targets Intel x86_64 and macOS Sonoma 14.1; it is not the separate Apple Silicon package.
  • Lightweight Mac builds require the matching development environment; the selected heavyweight build instead embeds Qt5 and Python 3 and uses OS Ruby.
