What is LDtk?

LDtk (Level Designer Toolkit) is a 2D level editor for building platformer and top-down game environments. Arrange levels in worlds, define entities such as player starts and triggers, and attach typed properties to the objects your game needs. Visual rules can automate tile placement instead of requiring every tile to be painted individually.

The editor exports documented JSON for integration with a game engine. Its Super Simple Export option produces level PNGs and a small JSON file for entity data, offering another route when a full importer is unnecessary. Direct Aseprite loading with live reloading lets changes to source art appear in the editor without an intermediate PNG conversion.

LDtk is focused on 2D platformer and top-down perspectives, not isometric 3D editing. Plan how your game will load the exported data: the publisher offers integrations and optional Tiled TMX export, but your engine still needs a suitable import workflow. The linked Windows EXE is release 1.5.3, published January 15, 2024; its availability was checked through HTTP HEAD only, not installation or execution.

What it offers

  • Organize levels into grid-based, linear or free-layout worlds.
  • Use visual rules to automate tile rendering.
  • Define entities with custom typed properties, including paths and inventories.
  • Export documented JSON, or use Super Simple Export for level PNGs and entity JSON.
  • Load Aseprite files directly with live reloading.
  • Use optional Tiled TMX export and project backups.

Good to know

  • Designed for 2D platformer and top-down perspectives; the publisher explicitly excludes isometric 3D editing.
  • Loading levels into a game requires an appropriate engine importer or export workflow.
