What is LocalSend?

LocalSend moves photos, videos, documents and text between devices on the same local network. It is useful for sending files from a Mac to a Windows or Linux computer, an Android phone or an iPhone without uploading them to a cloud service. Install and open LocalSend on the devices, choose what to send, and select the nearby recipient. No account is required.

The free, open-source application uses HTTPS for transfers and offers optional PIN verification. Its desktop interface shows individual files and overall transfer progress. This entry links to the publisher’s version 1.18.2 macOS DMG; the versioned publisher README lists macOS 11 Big Sur as the minimum.

LocalSend is for local sharing, not sending files to someone over the internet. Firewalls, router access-point isolation or macOS Local Network permissions can prevent devices from finding each other. The standalone app does not auto-update; the publisher recommends an app store or package manager when managed updates are important.

What it offers

  • Send files and text directly between nearby devices over a local network.
  • Share between macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and iOS devices.
  • Transfer without an account, internet connection or third-party file server.
  • Use HTTPS transfers with optional PIN verification.
  • View per-file transfer status and total progress.

Good to know

  • Devices need a shared local network; LocalSend does not provide remote internet file sharing.
  • Firewall rules, router AP isolation and macOS Local Network permissions can block device discovery.
  • The standalone application does not auto-update.
