What is Logisim?
Logisim helps students explore digital logic by drawing circuits and watching their signals change during simulation. Place gates, inputs and outputs on the canvas, connect them with wires, and use the wire colors to follow values through the design. Built-in components include multiplexers, arithmetic circuits, flip-flops and RAM.
For larger projects, turn a circuit into a reusable subcircuit rather than redrawing it each time. The combinational analysis module connects circuit diagrams, truth tables and Boolean expressions, making it useful for comparing a design with the logic it should implement. Completed circuits can be saved, printed or exported as GIF images.
This entry covers Carl Burch’s original Logisim 2.7.1, not Logisim-evolution. Original development is officially suspended, and the Windows EXE requires Java according to the publisher’s historical instructions. Those instructions specify Java 5 or later; they do not establish compatibility with current Windows or Java releases. The gallery image shows the classic Windows interface, not a newly tested installation.
What it offers
- Draw and simulate digital logic circuits with color-coded wires.
- Reuse circuit layouts as subcircuits in larger designs.
- Build with gates, multiplexers, arithmetic components, flip-flops and RAM.
- Convert between circuits, truth tables and Boolean expressions with combinational analysis.
- Save circuit files, print layouts or export GIF images.
Good to know
- Development of the original Logisim is officially suspended; this is a legacy release rather than an actively maintained application.
- Requires a separate Java runtime. The historical publisher minimum is Java 5; compatibility with current Windows and Java releases has not been verified here.
