What is Magic Number Machine?
Magic Number Machine is a scientific calculator for entering and revisiting mathematical expressions on a Mac. Its graphical expression display lets you change the insertion point, while expression history keeps earlier calculations available. The publisher lists 25 accurate digits of precision, complex-number calculations and decimal, hexadecimal, octal and binary displays.
Data drawers extend the calculator to statistics, linear regression and matrix operations, including Gaussian elimination, inversion and determinants. Built-in scientific constants and support for floating-point numbers in non-decimal bases make it useful beyond basic arithmetic.
This is legacy software, not a confirmed choice for a current Mac. The publisher specifies Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.6 or later and says active feature development has ended, although occasional bug fixes may appear. Apple Silicon and current macOS compatibility are not established by that requirement. The linked ZIP is the publisher's 1.0.32 package, not the separate older PowerPC build.
What it offers
- Graphical expression editing with a movable insertion point and full expression history.
- Publisher-listed precision of 25 accurate digits, with complex-number support.
- Decimal, hexadecimal, octal, binary and two's-complement displays, including non-decimal floating-point numbers.
- Data drawers for statistics, linear regression and matrix operations such as Gaussian elimination, inversion and determinants.
- Built-in scientific constants and value memory limited by available computer memory.
Good to know
- No longer in active feature development; the publisher says only occasional bug fixes may be released.
- Published requirements cover legacy Intel Macs. Apple Silicon and current macOS compatibility are unconfirmed.
