What is MAMP?
MAMP provides a local web server environment for developing and testing websites on macOS. It bundles Apache, Nginx, PHP and MySQL, so you can work with a PHP application on your own computer before moving it to a hosting service. The Mac control panel provides a document-root setting, a web-server choice and a PHP-version selector.
Choose MAMP when you need the free local environment rather than the separate commercial MAMP PRO feature set. The publisher distributes both products through a shared installer. Features such as managing multiple sites, deployment and snapshots are promoted as PRO upgrades; they are not included here as free MAMP features. Cloud backup for free MAMP also requires a paid MAMP Cloud Connect upgrade.
The linked 7.4.0 package is for Macs with Apple chips and requires macOS 11 or later. An Intel package is listed separately on the publisher's downloads page. The screenshot is a publisher illustration of the MAMP 7 interface, not proof of the PHP versions included in this download.
What it offers
- Run a local PHP website using the bundled web server and MySQL database environment.
- Choose Apache or Nginx from the Mac control panel.
- Set the document root and select a PHP version through the graphical interface.
- Use the publisher's bundled MySQL 5.7 or MySQL 8 environment.
Good to know
- Multiple-site management, deployment and snapshots are promoted as commercial MAMP PRO upgrades, not free MAMP features.
- Cloud backup in free MAMP requires a paid MAMP Cloud Connect upgrade.
- This package is for Apple-chip Macs with macOS 11 or later; Intel Macs need the separate Intel package.
