What is MapSource?
MapSource is Garmin’s Windows desktop software for viewing maps and organizing GPS data. You can edit waypoints and routes, inspect recorded tracks, and exchange supported data with compatible Garmin GPS devices. Available map detail and routing functions depend on the map product and GPS model, rather than the updater alone.
The linked file is Garmin’s MapSource 6.16.3 software update, dated October 25, 2010. It is intended to update an existing MapSource installation: Garmin explicitly warns that it will not work unless you already own a MapSource product. It is not a standalone free map collection, and updating the software does not update your maps.
Garmin lists Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later as the historical minimum for this release. Compatibility with current Windows versions has not been established here. The screenshot illustrates the legacy Windows interface with City Navigator Europe NT 2012.2 maps; it does not show maps supplied by this download.
