What is Maxima?
Maxima manipulates mathematical expressions rather than only returning decimal answers. It can differentiate and integrate expressions, work with Taylor series and Laplace transforms, solve ordinary differential equations and linear systems, and handle matrices and polynomials. Exact fractions, arbitrary-precision integers and variable-precision floating-point numbers support calculations where ordinary calculator precision is not enough.
The Windows installer includes command-line Maxima, Xmaxima and wxMaxima. Choose a terminal workflow or a graphical interface with formatted mathematical output, and plot functions or data in two and three dimensions. The selected download is the 64-bit Windows EXE installer for Maxima 5.50.0, not a separate wxMaxima-only package.
The project explicitly warns that a computer algebra system is not proven correct for every problem, so important results still need independent checking. The publisher identifies 5.45.1 as the last Windows installer that supports Windows 7. The gallery image illustrates an older wxMaxima interface on Linux; it is not a capture of this Windows release.
What it offers
- Manipulate symbolic expressions, including derivatives, integrals, Taylor series and Laplace transforms.
- Work with ordinary differential equations, linear systems, polynomials, vectors and matrices.
- Calculate with exact fractions, arbitrary-precision integers and variable-precision floating-point numbers.
- Plot functions and data in two and three dimensions.
- Choose command-line Maxima, Xmaxima or wxMaxima in the Windows package.
Good to know
- The project does not guarantee correct answers for every mathematical problem; check important results independently.
- This installer is for 64-bit Windows. The publisher names 5.45.1 as the last installer supporting Windows 7.
- The Windows package maintainer warns that an expired code-signing certificate may cause an unsigned-installer warning; graphical interfaces may also prompt for local firewall communication.
