What is mGBA?

mGBA runs Game Boy Advance, Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on a Mac. It is useful for playing your own cartridge dumps or homebrew titles, with save states for returning to a point in a game, rewind for revisiting recent play, and fast-forward for skipping slower sections. Keyboard and gamepad controls can be remapped in settings. Games are not included.

The desktop emulator also supports loading games from ZIP and 7z archives, applying IPS, UPS and BPS patches, and using Lua scripts. Its link-cable feature connects emulator instances on the same computer; networked link play is listed as a planned feature, not an available one.

The linked download is the publisher’s modern macOS 0.10.5 DMG for macOS 10.13 or newer. A separate legacy build is offered on the official downloads page. The publisher screenshot illustrates the desktop Scripting window introduced in 0.10.0; it is not a capture of version 0.10.5 running on macOS. Compatibility is not perfect, and the publisher documents remaining game and peripheral limitations.

What it offers

  • Emulate Game Boy Advance, Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.
  • Use nine save-state slots, rewind and fast-forward.
  • Remap keyboard and gamepad controls.

Good to know

  • Game ROMs are not supplied; provide game files you are entitled to use.
  • Networked link play is planned, not included; existing link-cable support is partial.
  • The publisher documents remaining compatibility bugs and unsupported peripherals, including the GBA Wireless Adapter.
