What is Microsoft Word?
Microsoft Word is a document editor for writing and revising letters, reports and other text documents. Its creation and editing tools support preparing documents for sharing, while Editor provides spelling, grammar and writing-style assistance. You can also work on a shared document with other people in real time; Microsoft's standalone Word product page specifies that files must be shared from OneDrive for this collaboration.
The download here is Microsoft's Windows Microsoft 365 setup, not a Word-only installer. Microsoft lists Word alongside Excel and PowerPoint in that suite and states that the Windows app requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. Microsoft also sells a separate standalone Word license for one PC or Mac, but that purchase is not what this download provides. Word on the web is a separate, free browser option and does not make the Windows desktop app free.
