What is NetLogo?

NetLogo is a desktop environment for exploring how individual agents produce larger patterns. Use it to model natural or social systems, from predator-prey populations to traffic. The Models Library provides simulations you can open and modify, while the programming language lets you define your own agents and rules.

An Interface tab brings together buttons, sliders, monitors and plots so you can change model settings and see the results. The Command Center lets you inspect and manipulate agents interactively. For repeated experiments, BehaviorSpace collects data across multiple runs with different settings.

This entry links to the publisher's NetLogo 7.0.4 64-bit Windows MSI package, which includes a private Java runtime. It is the desktop product, not NetLogo Web. On older or less capable graphics hardware, the 3D view or its full-screen mode may be unavailable. The application is GPL-licensed, but individual Models Library entries have their own licenses; check a model's Info tab before redistributing it.

What it offers

  • Program interacting agents to explore natural and social systems.
  • Open and modify pre-written simulations in the Models Library.
  • Build model interfaces with buttons, sliders, switches, monitors and plots.
  • Inspect and manipulate agents through the Command Center.
  • Use BehaviorSpace to collect data from repeated model runs with different settings.

Good to know

  • The 3D view and full-screen 3D mode depend on graphics hardware and may not work on older or less capable systems.
  • Models Library entries have separate licenses; the application's GPL license does not describe every model's redistribution terms.
