What is Odin?

Odin is a general-purpose compiled programming language for developers who want direct control over data layout and memory allocation. Its distinct types, array operations and structure-of-arrays support suit code that works with structured data. The bundled core library and vendor bindings provide building blocks for applications, graphics and games without making Odin a game-only language.

The linked download is the official dev-2026-10 Windows AMD64 ZIP archive, not a graphical development environment or a self-contained toolchain installer. Before using it, install the MSVC compiler and Windows SDK through the Desktop development with C++ component described in the official guide. The compiler directory can optionally be added to PATH. With a source package prepared, odin build compiles it; odin run also executes the resulting program.

The compiler remains in development. Treat the monthly development tag as an identified release, not a stable-version guarantee, and check release notes when updating an existing project. Compiler and base/core source use the zlib license; vendor packages can carry separate terms.

The screenshot is a historical compiler-diagnostics example from a 2023 issue, shown in a WSL terminal on a Windows host. It illustrates the command-line workflow, not the current native Windows interface or an unresolved defect in this download.

What it offers

  • Compile directory-based Odin packages from the command line; choose build or compile-and-run workflows.
  • Use distinct types, built-in arrays and structure-of-arrays data types.
  • Control memory layout and allocation through custom allocators.
  • Use bundled core packages and vendor bindings for graphics APIs and libraries such as Direct3D, Vulkan and raylib.

Good to know

  • Windows setup requires the MSVC compiler and Windows SDK; the Odin ZIP alone is not the complete prerequisite toolchain.
  • The compiler is still in development; the dev-2026-10 monthly release is not a stable-version guarantee.
  • Vendor library licenses can differ from the compiler and base/core zlib license.
