What is Open Policy Agent?
Open Policy Agent separates policy decisions from the application code that enforces them. Write rules in Rego, provide structured input such as JSON, and query the engine for a decision. Results can be an allow-or-deny answer or structured data, such as a list of infrastructure policy violations. This makes OPA useful for developers working on authorization, Kubernetes admission policies and CI/CD checks.
The Windows download is the AMD64 command-line executable, not a desktop policy editor. Use opa eval to evaluate a policy with input and data files, opa run for an interactive REPL, or server mode to expose policy queries through an HTTP API. Your application or integration must still act on the returned decision: downloading OPA does not automatically enforce rules across a Windows computer.
The screenshot shows the publisher’s historical browser-based Rego Playground examples catalogue from March 2020, including access-control, Envoy and Kubernetes examples. It illustrates the optional learning environment, not a Windows-native interface or the appearance of version 1.22.0.
What it offers
- Express policies in the declarative Rego language over structured input and data.
- Evaluate policies from the command line with input, data and bundle options.
- Experiment with queries in the interactive opa run REPL.
- Run OPA as a server and query policy decisions through its HTTP API.
- Return structured results as well as simple allow-or-deny decisions.
Good to know
- OPA makes policy decisions; the calling application or integration remains responsible for enforcement.
- The selected package is the Windows AMD64 executable. Minimum Windows version and ARM64-native compatibility were not established from the inspected publisher sources.
- Version 1.22.0 changes bundle-signature filename handling. Affected bundles with files matching *signatures.json need re-signing; the release notes describe the compatibility break.
