What is OpenEXR Viewer?
OpenEXR Viewer opens EXR files for inspecting their image layers and technical metadata. It automatically combines RGB, Luminance-Chroma and Y layers, so you can examine the image alongside the information stored in its header. It is useful when you need to see which layers a rendered EXR contains rather than just a flattened preview.
The selected download is the publisher’s 0.6.1 Windows 64-bit EXE installer, released on December 9, 2023. The upstream release notes describe a fix for a potential buffer overflow with large images. That fix is not a safety guarantee: the project README still describes the software as an early version and warns users to expect crashes and an unpolished interface.
The screenshot is an older publisher-provided Linux desktop capture illustrating the layer and metadata layout; it is not a Windows 0.6.1 installation capture.
What it offers
- View OpenEXR images and inspect detailed file metadata.
- Browse image layers with automatic RGB, Luminance-Chroma and Y layer combinations.
- Inspect the header and layer hierarchy alongside image views.
Good to know
- The publisher describes the application as an early version and explicitly warns of crashes and an unpolished interface.
- The upstream README does not specify a minimum Windows version; Windows compatibility has not been independently tested.
