What is OpenRocket?

OpenRocket is a free, open-source model rocket design and flight simulator. Build a design from individual components or catalog parts, inspect it in 2D or 3D, and compare motors before building the physical rocket. The design workspace shows center of gravity and center of pressure as you adjust the model.

Flight simulation supports multiple stages, motor clusters and wind settings at different altitudes. Plot the results, export simulation data to CSV, or use the optimizer to explore changes to dimensions and flight performance. Version 24.12 also adds SVG fin export and component-analysis parameter sweeps.

The linked DMG is the macOS Apple Silicon installer, not the Intel package. Intel Mac users need the separate Intel installer from the publisher. The packaged release includes its Java dependencies; an exact minimum macOS version was not established from the sources used here.

What it offers

  • Build and inspect rocket designs in 2D and 3D with real-time center-of-gravity and center-of-pressure indicators.
  • Simulate six-degree-of-freedom flights with staging, motor clusters and multi-level wind settings.
  • Plot simulation results and export flight data to CSV for further analysis.
  • Explore design optimization, component-analysis parameter sweeps and SVG fin export.

Good to know

  • The linked Apple Silicon DMG is not the Intel Mac package; Intel users must select the separate publisher installer.
