What is Oracle Berkeley DB?
Oracle Berkeley DB gives developers an embedded key-value storage engine rather than a separate general-purpose database server. Applications access data through library calls, with storage methods such as Btree, Hash, Queue and Recno. It suits software that needs local persistence and control over how records are stored and accessed.
Berkeley DB 18.1 also includes db_gui, a Java-based interface for creating environments and databases, browsing records and performing administrative tasks. The publisher's Windows screenshot shows its Create Environment page; it is a view of the administration tool, not a claim that the library itself is a standalone desktop database application. Oracle's GUI tutorial requires JDK 8 or higher.
The linked download is Oracle's 18.1.40 source archive, not a Windows installer or prebuilt executable. Building for Windows requires a suitable development toolchain; Oracle documents Visual Studio solution files in the distribution's build_windows directory. Choose this package when you need the library sources and can build and integrate them.
Version matters when following older documentation: the 18.1.40 change log removes the SQL API and Berkeley DB client-server architecture. Oracle directs users who need those features to 18.1.32 or earlier. Open-source use is subject to AGPL v3; Oracle also offers commercial licensing for applications whose distribution requirements do not fit those terms.
What it offers
- Embed key-value database access directly in an application through library APIs.
- Choose Btree, Hash, Queue or Recno storage methods.
- Use transaction processing and replication for database applications.
- Create environments and databases, browse records and perform administrative operations with db_gui.
Good to know
- This download contains source code, not a ready-to-run Windows installer; building and integration are required.
- The SQL API and Berkeley DB client-server architecture are no longer supported in version 18.1.40.
- The GUI requires JDK 8 or higher according to Oracle's tutorial.
- AGPL v3 obligations apply to the open-source edition; Oracle offers a commercial license for closed-source distribution.
